Human Sanitation Services was stunned.

Even those who had bet on Remy out of moral support assumed Geanna would win. Remy was only a cook; Geanna bag-tagged in the field. Remy was the bad student; Geanna, the impatient teacher. This was not how it was supposed to end.

Eli started clapping. Zia joined him, then Jack Flash and Jean joined them. Doug and Eddie whistled and clapped, each picking Remy up in a tight hug before dropping her to her feet. Soon, Remy, Doug, and Eddie were being cheered. Zia bounded up to her. “Come on. Let’s go get your hands fixed up.”

Zia stayed with Remy as the medics put salves on her hands and injected her with a half-dozen of the recently delivered medical nanobots. The medic was quiet as Remy answered Zia’s questions about the competition. “You never looked up except that once,” Zia said. “You were moving so fast.”

“I had no idea how fast I was going,” replied Remy. “Each time I slowed down, I worried she was nearly or already done. I couldn’t look up, because I was afraid she would be done before I was even near to done.”

“From what I heard, the opposite is true,” the medic said, smiling. “Congratulations, Remy: I won a lot of swag because of you. I don’t expect you’ll listen this time either, but please let the nanobots fix your hands?”

Remy looked over at Zia, somber. “I don’t think it’s going to be a problem any longer.” She smiled and slipped from the examination table. “Well, I hope you don’t mind, but I need to take a shower. I smell like a bag-tagger,” Remy said, hastily adding, “No offense meant, Zia.”

Zia laughed. “I’m not offended.” She followed Remy to the locker room and asked what Remy planned to do for the future. Remy answered truthfully: she had no idea. Zia raised an eyebrow as Remy removed the resin tags from the red lingerie she had dumped into the bottom of her locker months before. “Are you sure you want to wear those tonight?”

“Yes.”

“So,” Zia said, not watching Remy dress, “Are you and Jack B. back together?”

“No.”

“So, uh, you looked like you almost lost control right near the end and then you just, well, fixed it and was done! I mean, if you were doing that with black wrap, the adhesive wouldn’t have gotten a chance to stick to itself: you were so fast.” Zia looked over as Remy straightened the bodysuit she had just dressed in. “Then you picked that giant thing up, yourself, and hung it up. It was amazing.”

“I do it all the time,” Remy said, selecting a newer-looking coverall from the pile and slipping it on over her unitard. “It’s my job.”

“No one expected it; most people think you just cook and yell at the kitchen people like Jean does.” Zia smiled as Remy looked over and chuckled, shaking her head. “Well, anyone who’s ever worked with Gea knows she gets the men to lift her wrap-jobs.
